Puma skinner
Smilla's Sense of SnowThe Puma skinner is a knife Smilla gives Isaiah, and its significance develops through two sharply contrasting moments: his private, unspoken attachment to the gift and its later presence among the possessions preserved in his cigar box. The knife connects a small act of care to the account of Isaiah’s fear and the security he seeks in the mechanic’s basement.
The Gift and Its Meaning
Smilla buys Isaiah the short, broad-bladed knife. He does not thank her, and his expression shows no surprise. Instead, he carefully lifts it from its green felt box and leaves soon afterward. Smilla understands that he is going to the basement beneath the mechanic’s workbench to curl up with the knife. The exchange needs no explanation between them: each knows what the gift means to the other, although Isaiah will take months to understand that it truly belongs to him.
A Source of Comfort
The knife returns in an account of Isaiah’s time in the basement. When the custodian arrives unexpectedly to retrieve wine stored near the furnace, Isaiah is holding the knife and appears frightened. Even after recognizing the visitor, he continues to tremble. The mechanic takes Isaiah onto his lap for the first time, speaks with him, and brings him upstairs when Isaiah does not want to go home. Isaiah sleeps on the sofa while the mechanic stays nearby; during the night, Isaiah repeatedly wakes in distress. In this recollection, the knife is part of the scene of fear, but it also belongs to the familiar refuge where Isaiah has chosen to keep close to his new possession.
The Knife Among Isaiah’s Belongings
Later, the Puma skinner lies sheathed inside Isaiah’s cigar box. Smilla describes its broad, carefully polished antler hilt. It is stored alongside four other items: an old harpoon point, a bear claw, and a cassette wrapped in faded green graph paper bearing the capitalized word NIFLHEIM, as well as another object. The knife’s placement among these belongings changes its meaning: it is no longer only a gift Isaiah has learned to claim, but one surviving part of the material record he left behind.
